on this Memorial Day
we remember all those ones
who had to fight
and gave their lives


to serve our country
right or wrong
to protect the freedom we have
and our way of life


we owe a debt of gratitude
we sigh when we think of all who died
and those families and their memories
who always are left behind


there’s something hollow about the bugle call
the sound of taps as our farewell
the folded flag given after the fall
and what is left after that all


so on this Memorial Day
we take a little time
to stop and reflect with gratitude
for those who paid the ultimate price
to live with the freedom America gives
let’s honor their memories
with a better future
for the next generation to live
